sample tip: egyptian breeze

This image of Pilar was shot in Egypt during a PTO event (Photo Training Overseas) we chose to shoot one hour before sunset to capture the softer ambient light, on a beautifully breezy day

At this time of day (some call the magic hour) the contrast is lowered owing to the angle of sun having to penetrate a much greater degree of atmosphere

Consideration was given to a pose that worked with the direction of the wind as well as with the flash lighting, the breeze lifted Pilar’s hair and dress

I positioned two Canon Speedlite’s at right angles (90degrees) to Pilar at a distance of approximately 3 meters. With the Speedlite’s set to manual, I adjusted the output to give an aperture of F5.6 at Pilar

With the flash exposure now set to record Pilar accurately, I then took an ambient meter reading from outside of the dome, and selected a shutter of a 30th of a second to overexpose the background ambiance by 2 stops to lift the key into the brighter tones

Shot on - Canon 5D with a 16mm–35mm 2.9L lens set to 30mm

Flash lighting -Two Canon Speedlites, triggered by a Canon ST-E2 Transmitter

Exposure - F5.6 at 30th at 100 ISO
